How To Hinge Cut To Improve Your Hunting Land

Hinge-cutting serves several purposes in regard to improving both whitetail habitat and your hunting experience. There are two main types of hinge cuts including a cut for screening and funnels and a cut for bedding. Hinge cuts for screening and funnels should be done somewhere between the knee and waist to block a deer’s vision as well as block a travel path. Hinge cuts for bedding should be done around chest high so that there is room for a deer to bed underneath.

With both types of hinging, the point is to keep the tree alive by cutting it just enough to fall over while still keeping part of the trunk attached. Certain types of trees will hinge better than others and the best time to hinge is while the sap is low in the tree, typically in the winter months before spring green up.

Another benefit of hinging, regardless of style, is that more food is made available at “deer” level by bringing tender buds to the forest floor and also allowing more sunlight to reach the forest floor which will stimulate growth out of the ever-present seed bed. With browse making up a substantial portion of any whitetail diet, the more the merrier.

I’ve always wanted to somehow lengthen my deer season into the off-season. Hinge-cutting has been one method of keeping me interested year-round. I find myself thinking about ways to create funnels, screens, and bedding areas while on stand during season and waiting for the season to get over to get to work on hinging!

We had a glaring problem with our 20 acre woodlot which was the fact that deer could essentially enter and leave the woods at any point around the entire perimeter. Without much consistency, it made patterning and hunting there more of a challenge than it already was. Hinge-cutting has made a profound affect on controlling deer movement. Instead of struggling to figure out where the deer would enter or leave the woods along a 500 yard edge, we have now limited it to three different areas. This is done by hinging along the edge to most of the trails and leave the trails open that we feel will create the best hunting opportunity.

Hinging along the edge of the woods also helps to screen the interior of the woods and any deer inside. Not only do the fallen trees help to break up your outline, but new growth from the sunlight that reaches the forest floor starts to come up including grasses, weeds, and suckers growing off of the still-living stumps of the hinged trees. Screening to stand locations is very important as what good is the perfect location if every deer in the area can see you walking there?

This style of hinge-cut also works perfectly in creating a pinch point or funnel for any woodlot stand setup. If you love a location, but wish the deer would travel 30 yards closer to you, then drop a couple trees and push them that way. It is amazing how easy it is to do.

Bedding areas can be created quickly and effectively by using chest high hinge cuts. Deer love safe, secure cover. Many times, I’ve found beds that are canopied by one thing or another whether it be an outcropping or fallen tree. Hinged trees will provide the overhead cover desired accompanied with creating new browse and thickening the forest floor once sunlight is able to reach it. Areas as small as a 1/4 acre will work for this and the beauty of it is that you can control where you create them! You are able to start to create a line of movement from bedding areas to food sources.

While I have loads of work ahead of me, hinge-cutting will remain a huge part of my whitetail habitat improvement plan. Creating more bedding cover and additional browse will help keep more deer on my property throughout the year. It is only one portion of a larger habitat improvement program, but it is a key component that cannot be left out.

So, you have decided that you want to learn a new hobby – fishing. There are several ways of learning, the hardest way being trial and error. The best way is to find an instructor for one-on-one instruction.

3. Go to a party: There are party boats that carry from five to as many as sixty anglers. The boat provides everything you need such as bait, rod, reel, sinkers and hooks. They assist you in fishing and even take the fish off the hook for you as well. You will make new fishing mates and they will help and advise you. Party boats will generally cost you between $25 – $70 a day and the fish are yours to keep. The party boat is a bargain for beginners.

4. Choose your pier: After you have already learned the skills to operate a rod and reel, you should look for a fishing pier. Most seaside cities have a public pier or pay-to-fish pier. You can rent tackle and buy bait on these piers and, if you do have trouble, there are many pier anglers willing to assist and offer you tips.

5. To do party or pier?: You should try either method three or four times each or both at the same time at this point. The best thing to do is to practise them both ways a few times to really learn how to do each method.

6. The reel deal: The conventional reel is probably what you’ve been using up to this point. The conventional reel is designed for loads of wear and tear. However, maybe you now want to consider other types or / and makes of reels. Ideally you have already met other fishermen and perhaps made a friend or two who can assist you in choosing a reel. You could even ask a tackle store owner for tips.

First off, you need to understand the mechanism of the reel and the other equipment. Learning to cast, tie knots and bait is not that complicated. Secondly, you need to learn where to fish. Successful fishermen know where the fish are located. Fish move from place to place and clever anglers know these patterns and are able to work out where the fish are swimming.

If you have taken down the deer, elk, antelope or goat of your dreams in a glorious hunting adventure, you will need to know how to skin the deer and how to get the most out of your kill. If you are just learning about hunting, this information will also be incredible handy for that remarkable day on which you will finally be able to skin a deer.

Essentially, the act of skinning a deer is thought of to be quite simple. The basic fundamental guideline behind it is to follow the built-in guidelines of the body of the deer and work from that standpoint. The skin and muscle tissues of the deer are naturally separate from one another because of the protective membranes, making the process of skinning a lot more like following a built-in blueprint than like trying to lift a rug in the dark. The skin should easily peel from the meat because of these membranes, creating little risk of tearing the skin or tearing the meat.

The most important aspect in skinning a deer is the use of your hands and the pull of your own body weight. With these two integral tools, the aspect of skinning a deer becomes incredibly simple. In fact, skinning a deer can typically be completed in about ten to fifteen minutes without any serious complications.

You should first hang the deer. This makes it easier for you to use your body weight in the skinning procedure and creates a greater leverage point for skinning the deer. This also ensures that the meat will stay clean. Whether you hang the deer from the neck or from the legs, there is no particular difference. It is essential to try to skin the deer within an hour or two of the deer’s death, making the skinning process a whole lot easier and faster.

Your knife should be very sharp. There is truth to the saying that a dull knife will cut you. Supposing the deer is hung by the legs, find the large tendon connecting the lower leg segment to the rest of the deer’s leg. You should push a whole with your knife in between the tendon and the bone there, and then use your fingers to feel the lump that is created by the deer’s double-jointed bone. Once you have found that lump, cut the lower leg at the lower end of the two parts of the double joint. Cut the skin and the tendons here and then snap the deer’s leg over your own leg, using your body’s leverage to break it.

After you have broken the deer’s legs, make several cuts around and near the tendon areas. There should be a whole between the tendon and the bone of the lower leg, as well as several incisions near the front legs. You will then sever and snap the front legs as well, making the skinning method easier. After you have made the initial incisions, you will begin the process of pulling the skin from the deer. Use your finger tips and thumbs to get inside the skin near the lower leg incisions and begin to pull the skin off.

Essentially, the pulling of the deer’s skin should work a lot like pulling a tight jacket or pair of blue jeans off. It may seem a little bit awkward, but the layer of meat revealed below the skin should be a more than ample reward. After the skin is pulled off, you will notice the meat is ready to go and the parting of the meat thanks to the deer’s membrane has made the whole process a lot simpler than you ever thought possible.

Skinning a deer, while not particularly romantic, is a process that should take around ten to fifteen minutes and relies almost entirely on your own body weight and strength to pull the skin off of the deer’s body. It really is that simple.

Woodworking School

Wood is by far the most fashionable material in the world for home items such as chairs, benches, doors, windows, cabinets, tables, wardrobes and jewellery boxes. Wood is still extensively used to make houses in many countries and not even only poor countries either. So it follows that woodworking is one of the most sought after skills in the world too.

Even though there is always a high demand for articles made from wood, there is always a shortage of good wood workers, carpenters and cabinet makers. This makes woodworking in any of its various guises a good trade to enter. In the past, there were shuttering carpenters, joiners, carpenters, ships’ carpenters, furniture makers, cabinet makers and wood workshop workers. These various varieties have melded to a certain degree.

So, what do you do if you want to go into the profession? Well, the traditional course was to become an apprentice to a tradesman, but that practice largely died out in the 1970′s and 1980′s. The route now is more likely to be through school and technical college, coupled with short term placements in industry until the ‘apprentice’ has passed his or, more and more frequently nowadays, her, final exams.

There is a lot of competition for jobs in the building industry in the West at the moment, so credentials are fairly essential, although any foreman carpenter knows within fifteen minutes of watching someone working how capable that person is. They can usually tell just by glancing in their tool bag in fact.

From this point on, the woodworking class may start to be segmented so that each section can specialize in its own specific niche. This may not occur until the second or third year of a three or four year course. At this point it is worth mentioning that the student should go as far as possible down the path to his or her niche as he/she can.

This is because, on a building site, it is generally recognized that the carpenter is in the most highly educated tradesman on site. It is for this reason that most general foremen are carpenters. Under the general foreman, there may be a foreman bricklayer, a foreman painter et cetera, but the foreman of these foremen is often a carpenter.

Therefore, other skills will have to be learned too. Once the student has left school and found a job, it is worth still going to night classes or asking the boss if there is a day release scheme to continue education. If being foreman is an aim, then you will require a good command of language in order to liaise with customers, fellow workers and management.

You will require people skills too and an ability to read plans and drawings and understand the financial aspects of a job. You will also have to be able to handle rude clients and grumpy bosses and learn what you can and what you cannot do to correct late or lazy workers.

They may teach some of the theory of these subjects in woodworking school, but not as much as you will learn on site. Once you have learned the essentials of how a real site works, then you can go back to night school to learn the finer points. In woodworking, as in all professions, you never know enough so you must always keep learning.
